Mingus is, to my ear, still evident in the music, but more “modern” inspirations are surfacing. Don Cherry’s “Complete Communion”, was very influential on the title tune of this record. Also I work more with the suite-format, that I started with the title-tune of “Twilight Land”: Instead of the regular jazz tune format (theme – solos – theme) I use a suite-form, where the melodic and harmonic material in a little theme are developed and turned upside down through the whole piece, every new version preceding the next soloist. This way of using limited melodic and harmonic material to develop a large piece of music, I found very inspiring and was to be carried even further on “People, Places, Times and Faces”.
